HOME>TIPS>Bounce

The flash head of many clip-on type flashes moves left/right/up (down). This is to light indirect flash to the subjects by bouncing the light of the flash off ceiling or wall. This means normally the bounce light.

1. The shadow behind the subject becomes strong.
2. The face becomes white when accessing closely.
3. The contrast is too strong.
4. The brightness is different clearly between the center and the circumference.

1. The unnatural shadow fades and not stands out.
2. Whole tone becomes soft and natural appearance.
3. To increase a sense of perspective.
4. The circumference is also lightened.

The flash light bouncing from a wall, ceiling or floor etc. lights the subject from various directions including the diffused reflection by changing a point light source into a surface light source. i. e. Enabling the similar natural light to the subject with proper flash output. The unnatural direct flash light can be improved much by the bounce lighting.

In case of using TTL auto function In case of using flash auto mode
Mode of camera Program, Apeture Preference, Manual Manual
Mode of flash TTL Flash auto mode

■Be careful the color of ceiling or wall.
If the color of ceiling or wall is not white or black, the color of bouncing light becomes the same. (for example:the ceiling is red colorthe bouncing color is red, too the subject is also reddish.)

■The effectiveness of bounce photography is decreased in a wide room.
The bounce photography utilizes the bounce flash light from the reflector such as ceiling or wall. Naturally, when taking photos in a wide room, the flash light reaches to the reflector, but does not reach to the subject. Be careful that the flash light itself can be seen by eyes, but is very week light for film or CCD.

There are many methods of bounce photography and various photographing conditions. In order to combine the said methods, the possibility shall be increased infinitely. In other words, there are not any particular methods. Especially, when taking photos by manual mode, the photographing conditions such as How to set the aperture How decreasing the flash output etc. are leaned through experiences of each person. There is no correct answer. Please try to challenge to the bounce photography without fearing faults.
